Higher education institutions in the Netherlands

The Dutch higher education system is made up primarily of three different types of institution. These are Research Universities, Universities of Applied Science and Institutes for International Education.

 

There are 14 research universities which are mainly responsible for offering research-oriented programmes in an academic setting. They are a great choice if you have got a wide range of interests and do not want to limit your options if you are unsure of what career path you would like to follow.

 

Besides, there are 39 Universities of applied sciences in Netherland that offer programmes that focus on the practical application of arts and sciences. These tend to be more practice oriented than programmes offered by research universities and they prepare students for specific professions. Institutes for international education, on the other hand, offers programmes designed especially for international students.

 

Certain degrees levels are only available from each institution type. Research Universities offer all levels of degree from Bachelors to Masters to PhD while Universities of Applied Science only offers Bachelors and Masters. Institutes for International Education only offers Master’s programmes.
